Stretched or torn earlobe piercings

There are several causes for stretched or torn earlobe piercings:

  • Ear stretching (tunneling)
  • Trauma
  • Improperly placed piercings
  • Earrings that are too heavy
  • Aging, etc.

Treatment for stretched earlobe piercings is usually surgical – the stretched holes are excised along with the scar tissue and the wounds are closed with stitches under local anesthesia. Stitches are removed approximately 10 days later. New ear piercings can be made after full healing of the wounds, usually after about 3 months.

Dermal Fillers for Restoring Stretched or Sagging Earlobes

In some cases, dermal fillers can be an alternative to surgery. They are suitable for adding volume to sagging or stretched earlobes, or for rejuvenating very small earlobes. The effects of dermal fillers typically last about 1 year and the treatment can be repeated if needed.
