Photobiomodulation – inflammation and pain therapy

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a clinically proven, non-invasive therapy used to promote wound healing, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. It is effective for a wide range of conditions, including back pain, joint pain, and sports injuries, among others.

PBM uses low-level visible red to near-infrared light energy, which stimulates cells to heal naturally, reduce pain, and suppress inflammation. The process also enhances tissue regeneration, boosts cell metabolism, increases lymphatic flow, and stimulates microcirculation.

Benefits of Photobiomodulation Therapy:

  • Highly effective for pain relief
  • Reduces signs of inflammation (e.g. swelling, redness)
  • Non-invasive
  • Fast and simple
  • Painless
  • Safe

How Does PBM Work?

The therapeutic mechanism of photobiomodulation involves three stages:

1. Light energy is absorbed by mitochondria in cells, specifically by cytochrome c oxidase, resulting in increased ATP production – the energy source that fuels cell activity and metabolism.

2. This triggers the production of mild reactive oxygen species (ROS), which stimulate gene transcription and cellular repair.

3. PBM also promotes vasodilation, improving blood circulation and nutrient delivery to the treated area.
