Lip Lift

Youthfulness and sensuality are often associated with full, plump lips. Studies have shown that fuller lips enhance the overall aesthetic appearance of the face.

However, many are unaware that aging and collagen loss are key reasons why the lips and surrounding areas become thinner, lose volume, and begin to sag over time. This results in the lengthening of the area between the nose and upper lip (the philtrum). Despite naturally beautiful lips, many women seek ways to enhance their fullness.

Lip Lift – Enhancing the Lips When the Distance Between the Nose and Lip Is Too Long

A short upper lip and an elongated space between the nose and the upper lip are the main indications for a lip lift procedure. The cause of this long distance may be congenital, in which case dermal fillers often don’t help – years of repeated filler injections may eventually lead to filler migration and the appearance of “duck lips.”

In such cases, we recommend dissolving previous fillers at least 2 weeks before the surgery (preferably earlier) to restore the natural lip shape, allowing the surgeon to better assess how much tissue needs to be removed during the procedure.

Another reason for a lip lift is age-related tissue sagging. As we age, the skin loses elasticity and volume across the face, including around the lips and mouth. Bone structure and dental changes also contribute, as the teeth no longer support the mouth as before. One visible result of this is the elongation of the space between the nose and upper lip.

Additionally, collagen and elastin synthesis in the skin decreases over time, causing loss of firmness and downward shifting of tissue. The upper lip often turns inward with age, giving it a thinner appearance, and may start to cover the upper teeth—making the mouth and face appear older.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Lip Lift?

  • You are bothered by the long distance between your nose and upper lip
  • You want naturally fuller lips with a permanent result, without fillers
  • You haven’t achieved the desired look with fillers

A consultation with a plastic surgeon and/or Dr. Mari Laasma is required before scheduling the procedure.

What Are the Main Advantages of a Lip Lift Compared to Fillers?

  • Natural-looking result
  • Permanent outcome that lasts a lifetime
  • Elimination of issues caused by migrated filler over the years
  • One of the most popular lip-enhancing procedures worldwide
  • A fuller and more youthful-looking upper lip
  • Shorter distance between the upper lip and nose
  • Predictable and stable results
  • Vertical lip enhancement without creating the “duck lip” effect

How Is the Surgery Performed?

Under local anesthesia, a batwing-shaped incision is made along the base of the nose, where the resulting scar is nearly invisible.

A small strip of skin is removed, lifting the central and lateral parts of the upper lip by a few millimeters toward the nose. This creates a fuller upper lip and reduces the distance between the nose and mouth. More of the upper teeth are visible when speaking or smiling, resulting in a more youthful and balanced appearance.

Unlike fillers, a lip lift provides a permanent and predictable result.

After the Procedure:

  • Apply an ice pack to the surgical area during the first 48 hours
  • Avoid smoking for 2–4 weeks
  • Refrain from intense physical activity for several weeks
  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated (e.g., supported by two pillows) to reduce swelling
  • Avoid opening your mouth too wide
  • Eat soft foods post-op, and for the first couple of days, you may need to drink through a straw
  • Brush your teeth gently using a small toothbrush during the first postoperative week
  • Keep your lips moisturized
  • Clean and care for the incision site as instructed by your doctor

A consultation with a plastic surgeon is required prior to the procedure. After the consultation, you can schedule your surgery in person at the clinic, by email, or by phone.
